Codes & Standards

Codes, Standards and Certifications for Hazardous-Area Fire and Gas Safety Products and Systems

Det-Tronics products, used in hazardous areas and often in extreme environments, typically must comply with multiple sets of requirements, including regulations or directives, codes, standards and product certifications. A good place to start is by defining some key terms and the relationship between these different requirement types.

  • Regulation /Directive: High-level law created by government authority.
  • Code: A set of recommended practices developed through an industry consensus process (International Standards).
  • Certifier: An agency with proven competency through an accreditation process that provides product audit and certification services.
  • Accreditation Body: A government appointed agency that issues product certifiers an accreditation certificate based on demonstrated competency to standards.
  • Standard: An agreed-upon best practice for an industry (International Standards).
  • Certification: A certifier's declaration of product conformance to a set of standards.
